On Sunday, July 14th, the grand opening of the 3rd International Soil Moisture School (ISMS) in the vibrant city of Budapest was a resounding success! Hosted by the prestigious Budapest University of Technology and Economics, this summer school aims to engage young professionals and students by providing essential information to fully explore data from existing and future microwave soil moisture missions. These efforts are geared towards both scientific analysis and societal applications, making a significant impact on global soil moisture research. Conducted by some of the best scholars and scientists from around the world, the school ensures a top-tier learning experience. Opening Ceremony Highlights:
Registration opened at the hotel lobby, allowing early arrivals to register and mingle, setting the tone for an engaging evening.
The ceremony kicked off with warm welcome remarks and an orientation by Zsofia Kugler, the local organizer and the director of the Knowledge Center for Water Sciences and Disaster Mitigation at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). Her insightful words set the stage for the sessions to come.
Next, Luke Thompson, a representative from the US Embassy in Hungary shared their perspectives, highlighting the collaborative efforts between nations.
David Kunkee, the vice president of IEEE’s Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society’s educational affairs presented on the global activities of GRSS, reflecting on its past, present, and future. His talk underscored the significance of international cooperation in advancing soil moisture research.
Attendees learned about the Fulbright program and heard inspiring stories from Fulbright Alumni. The representative’s introduction showcased the program’s impact on global education and research.
Simon Yueh, the SMAP project scientist and former editor in chief of the GRSS Transactions outlined the goals and structure of the Soil Moisture School, providing a comprehensive overview of what participants can expect over the course of the event.
The evening of interesting talks was capped off by Beretzky Ágnes, an Associate Professor of History at Károli Gáspár University took us on a journey through Budapest’s rich history, art, and culture, perfectly blending the essence of the city with the spirit of the event.
The evening concluded with an ice-breaker dinner at the hotel restaurant. Attendees enjoyed delicious food and lively conversations, forging new connections and friendships.
During the opening session, participants had the opportunity to introduce themselves and share their research interests.
