Experimental and Theoretical Investigations on the Effect of Crude Oil Products on
the Behavior of Self-Compacting Concrete and SIFCON Slabs.
Abstract
This study focuses on exploring the behavior of some special types of concrete, which are considered important types in modern civil engineering applications when exposed to crude oil products. The first part of this study is the experimental investigation on the properties of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) and Slurry Infiltrated Fiber Concrete (SIFCON) exposed to oil products at age (360) days, it will also investigate the behavior of slabs (SCC and SIFCON) that exposed to crude oil products. They are also compared with reference slabs (at air). While the second part is a three-dimensional finite element (FE) modeling of the (SCC and SIFCON) slabs in ABAQUS using the properties of concrete exposed to crude oil products and exposed to air, also the validation of the developed (FE) model with using the results to be obtained from experimental work to be carried out.
Research Significance
Normal concrete includes numerous micro cracks that rapidly increase under the applied stresses. These cracks are responsible for low tensile and flexural strength. Therefore, the production of concrete with high strength and low permeability is of considerable importance with respect to durability performance. Such special types of concrete with good properties as (SCC and SIFCON) are attempted to be achieved in this work by using them in the concrete slabs that are in contact with crude oil products. This investigation studies some mechanical properties of (SCC and SIFCON) in case of direct contact with various types of crude oil products. An attempt is made to produce (SCC and SIFCON) and investigate whether such concrete type demonstrates greatly improved strength and durability characteristics compared with ordinary concrete.
Research objectives and methodologies
The objective of this study is to make an experimental investigation of the overall behavior of the slabs of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) and Slurry Infiltrated Fiber Concrete (SIFCON) exposed to oil products at age (360) days under central load.
The main objectives of this study can be summarized as follows:
A. Experimental Work:
1) Studying the effect of different types of crude oil products (kerosene and gas oil) on some mechanical properties such as compressive strength, modulus of rupture, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) and Slurry Infiltrated Fiber Concrete (SIFCON) exposed to oil products.
2) Studying the behavior of different types of concrete (SCC and SIFCON) slab exposed to crude oil products.
3) Investigating the effect of thickness of (SCC and SIFCON) slabs on its behavior by testing the slab specimens (flexural test) after exposure to crude oil products.
4) To investigate the load-deflection curves of the samples of (SCC and SIFCON) slabs.
B. Analytical Work
1) Developing a numerical finite element (FE) model for simulating the effect of crude oil products on the behavior of (SCC and SIFCON) slabs.
2) To test the accuracy of computer program that is used in this study and comparing the results of all that have been studied in experimental work with analytical work.
