Thin-walled structural (column or beam) members are widely used in structural engineering. Mostly they are made of steel, produced by either hot-rolling, cold-forming, or welding. Thin-walled members are usually slender, therefore stability problems are of great importance. Though the various buckling phenomena, as well as their influence on the load-bearing capacity, are essentially known, still there are unresolved problems: in many cases there is room for widening our knowledge as well as enhancing design methods. In the frame of this topic selected problems of the behaviour of thin-walled structural members are aimed to be investigated by numerical (finite element, finite strip) methods, or occasionally by analytical methods. The topic is suitable for MSc, as well as senior BSc students.
