NEPTUN system
Neptun is the primary administration system for study matters at the University. It allows you to enroll for the semester, register for courses, view your personalized timetable, and register for exams. Enclosed with your admission letter, you received your unique 6-character identifier—the Neptun code—and an initial password. You can log into the system via a web browser using the link below.
You can register for an active semester via Neptun under the Administration menu, in the Enrollment/Registration section. To register, click on the + (plus) icon at the end of the corresponding semester's row, select Register, and then state in the pop-up window whether your status will be Active or Passive. If you select a passive semester, your student status will be suspended. The deadline for registering—whether active or passive—is the end of Registration Week.
For first-year students, initial courses are registered by the Central Academic Office (KTH). In subsequent semesters, students are responsible for registering for their own courses.
BME Címtár (EduID)
Most University websites allow you to log in using the BME Directory (BME Címtár) service. A Directory ID is automatically created for every student. You can find your ID on the Directory Administration page after logging in with your Neptun credentials.
You can log in using your Neptun credentials on the right, or your Directory account on the left. Once logged in, there is no difference in the available features.
Once logged in, you can view your Directory ID number listed next to the eduID label. Upon your first login, you must change your initial password. You can also use this page to update your password at any time in the future.
From now on, whenever this login page appears when accessing a University website, please use your Directory ID number and the password you set up.
You can also request Office 365 access on the Directory Administration page, which will serve multiple purposes later on - for instance, it is required to connect to the University Wi-Fi network and to access MS Teams. All students are kindly asked to complete their M365 registration.
With a Microsoft M365 account, you will have access to the following:
- MS Teams
- Your official @edu.bme.hu email address
- 10 GB of OneDrive cloud storage
- The BME Wi-Fi network (as well as Wi-Fi networks at many educational institutions worldwide)
Note: Microsoft has rebranded O365 to Microsoft 365 (M365), but it is still commonly referred to as O365 in most places, including the Directory Administration page.
Registration
You can set up access on the Directory Administration page (see BME Directory). After logging in, select the option "Configure user for Microsoft Office 365 suite". You can choose your own username.
Choose a username and select Yes under the "Request M365 access" ("O365 hozzáférés igénylése") option. Then click the "Save settings" ("Beállítások mentése") button.
Access will be created within 24 hours at the latest. From then on, you can access your account here (e.g., to read your emails).
For the login ID, enter the newly created @edu email address listed above, then click "Next".
The website will then redirect you to the BME Directory login page, where you can proceed using your Directory ID and password.
Using the Moodle Platform
At the Faculty of Civil Engineering, similarly to other faculties, a Learning Management System (Moodle) is used to support education. Through this platform, course materials are accessible for every subject, and in many cases, performance assessments and tests are also organized here.
You can log into the platform using your BME Directory credentials.
Every student is automatically enrolled in their respective courses based on their Neptun course registrations. Courses can be browsed by language, department, and course title; however, under the Navigation menu on the left, only your own enrolled courses are listed for quick access.
Archive data prior to the 2024/25 spring semester can be accessed on the following page. Subsequent semesters can be found under the Previous Semesters category.
Using MS Teams
MS Teams is an online communication platform that allows for video conferencing. Currently, instructors use this platform for online lectures and consultations.
A Teams group has been created for every course, and students who register for an O365 account by the beginning of the semester are automatically added to them. If you register later, you can join using a join code or by contacting your instructor.
Please contact instructors directly via Teams only when necessary and strictly during working hours. Instructors prefer email communication to keep all information in one place. Individual instructors may, of course, specify different preferences and will inform students accordingly.
The Teams platform is accessible via web browser, mobile device, and native desktop app. On laptops and desktop computers, using the native desktop application is highly recommended. You can log in using your M365 account (@edu.bme.hu).
When joining a video call, please keep the following guidelines in mind:
- Mute your microphone upon entry: When many participants join, unmuted microphones can be very disruptive and inappropriate.
- Protect your privacy: You can blur your background or replace it with a background image.
- Mind your appearance: Everyone on the call can see you via your webcam, so please ensure appropriate behavior and dress.
- Providing feedback: Depending on the number of participants, please use the chat sidebar or the reaction emojis at the top of the screen. Give verbal feedback only in small group settings or when specifically requested by the instructor.
Using the University Wi-Fi Network
The easiest way to access the University Wi-Fi network is by using your M365 account, so it is highly recommended to register for one if you have not already done so.
network is part of the international eduroam network. The main advantage of this is that once your access is set up and working on the BME campus, you will automatically have internet access at thousands of educational institutions worldwide without needing to reconfigure anything.
Detailed setup instructions can be found on the following page:
Using the @edu.bme.hu Email Address
After logging in with your BME Directory credentials on office.com, your Office applications will appear on the left sidebar. Select Outlook to access your mailbox. No additional software installation is required, as you can manage everything directly from your browser.
You also have the option to install the native Outlook application on your personal devices (desktop PC, laptop, or mobile phone).
Installing Office Applications
After logging in with your BME Directory credentials on office.com, you can download and install the Office suite on your computer by clicking the "Install Apps" button located in the top-right corner.
Available applications include:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- OneDrive
- Outlook
- Teams
- OneNote
Using the University VPN
Some of the University's digital resources and library databases are only accessible directly from the BME network. When studying or working from home, you can access these resources by establishing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. This service is available to all university members, and step-by-step setup guides are available on the BME IT support page.
When establishing a VPN connection, by default all internet traffic passes through the university network. For viewing non-university content, this can cause unnecessary slowdowns, so it is recommended to configure it so that not all traffic passes through the university network. For Windows 10/11.
However, in this case, certain content requiring university authentication may produce an error during authentication. To access the Learning Management System (Moodle), running the following PowerShell command provides a solution (for other websites, replacing the IP address is required):
Add-VpnConnectionRoute -ConnectionName "BME" -DestinationPrefix 40.115.114.91/32 –PassThru
