WHAT DOES A CIVIL ENGINEER DO?
Civil engineers are often confused with architects. While architects focus on designing buildings, civil engineers are responsible for realizing the built infrastructure and specialized structures essential to our daily lives.
They were formerly known as "civilization engineers",
as they create engineering facilities that ensure a civilized, safe, and environmentally friendly way of life.
In our homes, we take for granted the availability of safe drinking water, as well as the collection and treated discharge of wastewater back into natural water bodies. Civil engineers are responsible for
designing the necessary utility networks and managing their construction and operation.
Do you enjoy spending your holidays by the water? Our lakes and rivers offer excellent opportunities for recreation. At the same time, however, climate change is leading to increasingly frequent extreme weather events, resulting in periods of drought or, conversely, floods.

Thousands of civil engineers are working to create the necessary transport infrastructure—roads, railways, and bridges. Self-driving cars? Electromobility? High-speed railway network? New technologies require new or modernized infrastructure.

Civil engineers—specifically land surveyors and geoinformatics specialists—are the ones who oversee the entire lifecycle of facilities.
They create maps,
that serve as the foundation for designs. Through precise geodetic measurements, they guide and monitor the construction process, ensuring that structures are built in accordance with the planned geometry.
They survey the environment using modern 3D technologies and also employ augmented and virtual reality tools
to generate and visualize digital twins of our facilities.
